Choosing VFP Or VB
Hi,
I want to develop a small but widely used database application like
financial accounting software. My application will contain number of classes
and database. We have team of 5 experienced programmers. Now the major
problem is which platform should I choose ( Visual Basic With Access /MSSQl
Or Visual FoxPro ). I like visual FoxPro but I feeling everybody says VB is
more powerful then VFP. I have little experience about VFP and I like VFP.
Please give me your opinion in detail about VFP versus VB/Access-MSSQL.

I am not going to discuss the differences between VFP and VB, but here's a
good article about the difference between the various Microsoft databases.

Hi RK,
You haven't said whether you mean VB "classic" or VB.NET. I would never
begin new development in an old version of a development tool that isn't
nicely forward-compatible, so that rules out VB "classic."
If you use MS SQL Server, are your customers ready for the upkeep on an SQL
database and for the license costs if they purchase full versions of SQL
Server (as opposed to MSDE)?
You have 5 experienced programmers. What do they have experience in? The
development tool they have experience in is a better choice than a
"spectacular" development tool that they don't know and can't be productive
in.
You "have a feeling everybody says VB is more powerful than VFP." Do you
choose development tools by "everybody says" or by what's best for you?
What types of equipment and OSs will your clients be likely to have? Will
your app be able to run nicely in an older environment? How will you deploy
your application? Newer operating systems may have the .NET runtime already,
but if you choose VB.NET then the .NET runtime will need to be part of your
setup.
I hope this gives you some food for thought.

# 3 Re: Choosing VFP Or VB
Hi Cindy,
We have very powerfull team in sense of analysis & Design level. We are
currently working on DOS platform. Our softwares are very popular and widely
used in our area ( over 2500 customer base). We guess our customer ( of
future version of our packages ) will aquire atleast Windows XP based
system. We will also work in latest version of languages. Currently we
don't require MS-SQL type large server/client database. But surly we will
design our database & application in that way so we could convert our
application in MS-SQL like database tools.
I think i want to share someone's practical experiance on both platform.
So if you can share please reply soon.
