access visual dbase 7 from vfp
Anyone know of an odbc driver to access dbase 7 files from vfp? or vb? or
even sql server? Or of any way to access dbase 7 files without visual dbase
7?
Thanks in advance.

From a press release:
As part of this alliance, a promotional copy of the Advantage 32-bit ODBC
Driver will ship with the recently released Visual dBASE 7.5.

I wish I knew more about the business state of how well
dBase is doing. I never hear of it anymore, but I know
it's still around.

This problem is frustrating to me because it seemed so simple on the
surface. I have a client with a POS using dbase 7 files. All they want me to
do is write a basic interface so they can update their inventory from
electronic product lists supplied by their manufacturers. My platform of
choice is VFP. I can actually odbc into the dbase files using the native
microsoft dbase odbc driver, but it is not consistent, and I cannot update
the dbase files. Sometimes the views I create will open, sometimes they
error out. But never have I been able to update one. When you try to open
the dbase 7 file directly with a use command, it just says not a table.
The advantage server sounds like I would have to recreate/import the tables
into their server format and that's not what I want to do. I could be wrong
but that what it seemed like.
I simply want to read and write dbase 7 files.

If I were you on this, I would contact dBase directly and see what they say
in the way of connectivity through the industry-wide standards that everyone
else supports.
Either they have a driver or they may point you to the other company for
a driver solution, not a server solution.

At the dBase site, it appears that an ODBC driver ships with
dBase 7.5 and for royalty-free use. I know you are working
or trying to work against dBase 7. But, maybe the developer
using that is moving to 7.5 or knows something about whether
or not the ODBC driver shipped with version 7.
Just a thought.

Thanks. I didn't see that. Sounds promising.
I also emailed dbase technical support directly. They also have a product
calle dquery on their site for $100 that may work, but it's not shipping
yet!!!!

dbase technical support emailed back the following:
No, we do not sell ODBC drivers and I do not know of any that will allow you
to connect to dBASE 7 files.

Wow! That answers my question about how they've been doing.
They are an island with no connectivity to the rest of the world.
But, they finally got religion with 7.5. The only thing is you
have to buy dBase 7.5 to get the ODBC driver. Sorta sounds like
some other product we know if you want its OLE DB Provider. <s>
Well, things change. You can't keep everything to yourself forever.
