Does anyone know of any functions to access the cd player?

I've tried using the mci functions but they are not what I'm looking for. What I'm looking for is some functions that work at a lower level than the mci as I will be compiling a dll that works within another audio program (e.g they need to be using the same audio driver ect.).

Also, I'd like the option of being able to store cd audio data in a buffer.
