.Net and Unix

I'm not sure I'm in the right forum here.
If not, maybe you guys can direct me.

I was having a discussion with a colleague on Java and .Net.

He was telling me that .Net didn't run on Unix-machines and mainframes.
I wasn't convinced of that.

Maybe you guys can help me out?
Was he right or not ?

It is correct that Microsoft's .NET Framework runs only on Windows. There are, however, open source projects working to port .NET to other platforms. See http://www.mono-project.com/ for more information.
