LuisFigo,

Well, this sounds like a pretty exciting opportunity to me. There are literally hundreds of topics that you could do a paper about with those objectives. There are *always* new things going on in computer science, so you should have no trouble thinking of something that interests you.

If I were in your position, here are some of the topics that I might consider:
* Generics--this new language construct has recently added to both Java and C#
(That topic could be fairly technical though, so for an English class you might want to choose something less chewy like:)
* XML--Discuss how this markup language transformed enterprise IT by giving us a common way of describing the structure of our data and thereby making data interoperability and transactions far easier. In my opinion XML is the most transforming technology we've seen in years. And it can be an interesting topic, even to non-technical persons as you can concentrate on how quickly the technology was adopted, transformed data communications and made conducting business easier, and then receded somewhat into the background.
* Advancements in data query languages--This one is extremely timely as Microsoft has just this week announced the LINQ data query feature which, from what I'm hearing, will allow you to solve myriad programming problems with just a few lines of code. Besides LINQ you could discuss XQuery and how several different solutions have been proposed to help make it easier to query data from a data store. Some of the issues and inefficiencies of SQL could be dicussed.
* Security--While security is not exactly a new topic, you could probably pull this one off by emphasizing how much more important security has become to professional IT persons. The ubiquity of the Internet has made virii far more dangerous than it ever had before and virus writers are getting far more savvy. You can discuss the various categories of security products that are considered essential in the enterprise and discuss how they do their part to protect a company. If you're feeling controversial, you could also discuss the debate about when (or whether) and how to report new security vulnerabilities.
* AJAX--Again, not exactly new but new in the sense that it has suddenly become quite popular. AJAX is a way of programming a Web page so that a full server trip is not required. The screen can be partially refreshed, meaning there is no "flicker and wait" when you, as the user, need to submit data or when there is, for example, an image or a counter or a clock that requires constant updating.

I could do this all day. There are just so many topics. Consider some of the things that you discuss in your CIS coursework or surf around some of the IT sites and read the blogs of notable industry people and you will surely find a topic that interests you and seems appropriate for the assignment.

Good Day sir
Thank you very much for replaying my message
I'm not decide yet which topic I will choose... but it's either Generics or AJAX
may be it's a lot to ask but I will be pleased with some websites about both topics.

Again thank you for your time

I am also interested in this topic, but can you please explain to me what is really "Reporting Technical English" about? I understand the words, but not the concept... (sorry, English is not my native language)

So, I have to write a report about something new that has a relationship with my major.

Dear Lori,

thank you again for your time
I decide to choose Ajax's Topic

LuisFigo,

Well, I don't know what exactly your bibliography requirements are for this assignment but seeing as how "popular newspapers and magazines" by definition stick to topics that are of interest to a general audience and you are writing a paper that is by its nature specific to an industry, it seems a bit unfair that you should have to include those sources. I think it's unlikely that you will find any useful article about AJAX in anything other than an IT- or developer-focused print magazine or Web site. This would likely be the case with all of the topic ideas I gave you above, save security. Assuming that you can use unlimited number of Web sources, you should have no end of source material.

However, here are a few items that should help you:
1. This was the cover story from Information Week (which is a print magazine, BTW) a few months ago. It discusses a controversy over increased use of AJAX for building Web sites: http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=165600304
2. This is a very general overview of AJAX from InfoWorld (another print magazine):
http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/05/23/21FEwebapp_1.html
3. This is an opinion we published on dev-archive that discusses some of the risks of using AJAX: http://www.dev-archive.com/webdev/Article/28861

You should be able to find many more suitable articles just by putting in a few minutes with Google or go to your favorite IT Web sites and search on AJAX.
