DB2: mainframe vs. Unix platform
Cusotmer is looking to add services and has decided DB2 will be the database.
They have recently asked whether they should run it on their mainframe environment
or RS/6000 boxes. There is no preference for one or the other as both are
supported today. One comment was that DB2 is a processing hog on the mainframe.
Looking for an opinion and supporting facts.

Bob:
The real question is what expertise they have in house. Do they feel
more comfortable with OS390 DB2 or UDB on Unix. Under the cover, DB2 on OS/390
is not the same as UDB on Unix platform. Please put into your consideration
System support infrastructure such as scheduling software, monitoring software
and existing support policies.
I worked on both DB2 OS390 and DB2 UDB on Unix, bringing an application
up on both platform is not difficult. Performance of the DB is largely depends
on how well the application is designed, program and tuned. (What expertise
you currently have in house?)
Usually, the first thing we look at for processing hog is to examine the
SQL access path of the application, indexes on the tables . 80-90% of the
time, you'll find some issues there.
