Re2: How Can We Help?

Hi Lori,
just a note about new VB6 & Enterprise.NET. I've develloped an analysis
application using ADO (VB6 SP3); when I installed SP4 and recompiled the
app,I ran into problems due to the way ADO handles things in SP4 so I reverted
back to SP3. This is just to bring-up a point = are you going to cover surviving
technologies OR just the latest ones. Thank you.

NOTE = I'm Glad to see you moving to the DB2 direction. This way I get all
my information in one place.

Hi Lori

I too am inerested in learning more about accessing DB2 with ADO. I am in
the position of having to build an internet solution with a DB2 back end
- problem is that I have been working exclusively with Microsoft tools/products
for the last 5 years and am unfamiliar with incorporating anything else.

An article (or better yet, an immediate response with some links) would be

Hi Lori,

Buy everyone a SQL Server license? :-)

Really though, glad you guys set this group up. DB2 (UDB, really) on NT is
an ungainly beast, to say the least.

Hi Samuel,
Your question, I think is more of a general one, but I'm happy to answer
it. Our goal at dev-archive is to cover both. We try to keep our ear to the ground
and keep the coverage of new technologies/products vs. past versions roughly
in proportion to the interest our readership shows in both. You'll probably
see .NET coverage increase this year because people are going to have questions
about how to use it and why it breaks everything ;-) But just because we're
increasing there doesn't mean we won't have plenty of content on VB6. And
this goes for everything else too.
At some point, of course, the number of people still using a product that's
several revs back becomes so few that it's hard to justify doing big features.
But our libraries, such as Get Help and the Tip Bank, have tons of archived
material that isn't going anywhere.
So what I'm basically saying is that we'll keep covering older technologies
for as long as the readership is still telling us that they want that information,
and leaving in our wake an archive of material that should hold its value
over time.
Thanks,
Lori Piquet

OK so that's two votes at least for DB2 with ADO. Duly noted.

Is anybody out here running the UDB/400 on AS/400? I'd be interested in general
reactions to AS/400 stories, both database related and otherwise.

Finally, how intested are you in the BI features of your DB systems? For
example, if we ran a feature on DB2's OLAP capabilities or data warehousing
techniques, would you read it? Or for most of you is that NMJ (not my job)?

Thanks for all replies. They are very helpful to me.

As a new comer to the DB2 world I would like to see some basic information
about installing the database. I downloaded the DB2 Ver 7 personal edition
from IBM's web site and I am unable to get the thing running. I have posted
the Error message I get when I try to run the Command Center and various
other aspects of the DB. I would like to see a beginners section to help
us that are new to the system get up and running. Thanks

Lori,
I am very interested in DB2 related topics for the AS/400 (iSeries) server.
We are using DB2 on the AS/400 for both transactional and datamart type
applications. IBM continues to add features and performance ehancements
to the product, which have made DB2 on this platform very much "on par" (if
not ahead) with the other major RDMS implementations...Oracle, Sybase,MS
SQL Server, etc. Let me know if you have specific ideas/questions related
to DB2 on the AS/400.
