Either somebody is very young or has a very limited window of experience.
All that code out there will not be "deadweight" for a long, long time. If
it is working, do you have some VALID reason for trying to re-compile it
with the latest whiz-bang language?
The executables, and pseudo-executables using VBRUNxxx.DLL will continue
to run. ASP+ and ASP will co-exist on IIS, just like Cold Fusion does with
ASP today. I consult for a MAJOR Telco that did a recent merger. They have
code running on dBase III that processes mainframe data and creates HTML
pages. You expect them to throw all that out because Java is the "in" language
this year?
You want to talk flavors... Java is just interpreted GW-BASIC with a C++
attitude. Any coincidence that Java and Jabba sound so similar?
This thread started with the question, "what should I learn". One respondent
gave the correct answer..."Learn them all."
Anyone that harps that Java, or XML, SOAP, OR WHATEVER, is the be-all that
does-all reminds me of the person that uses a hammer to insert nails and
screws. If one tool could do all jobs, there would be only one tool.
Not that complicated is it?
