Direction

Hi,
I helped the company create an acess database that helps support a major
research project. Initially this database was something that evolved and
as a result it was totally messed up. My main job was to cleen it up and
I simplfied it considerably. I basicly had to create a new strucure and migrate
all data into the new one. I enhanced the user interface and the users are
very happy. I also managed to automate some of the data entry which saves
the company at least a few days of work.
In my performance review I was told that my Boss was very happy with my performance.
I did some VB development for parts of the user interface.
However after this thing has been completed I have not been given much work
there are a few automation projects that I have done quite successfully :.
Excel to Powerpoint etc.. and at other times I just have to interigate this
database which now I find quite easy, infect recently I have created interfaces
for the users to do this as a result I am haivng less and less to do.
During my last year I never got any training and this year I have negotiated
4 weeks worth. Mainly VB on the web, I dont know about what the next 3 be.
I have currently got an MSC in Information managment which was very intensive
with SSM, although I now dont use that methodlogy anymore. The problems I
have are as follows:
1) We dont have any standard documentaion e.g. UML etc. my boss is more of
a stats guy, but knows a lot of VBA etc.
2) I am not getting exposure to bigger databases e.g. SQL server.
3) I am not in contact with any senior VB based programrs.

All this concerns me. Recently I have been experimenting with internet based
development. Which is really cool, but I don't see any business comming
in that shall involve me. Also I am sure I would need to be familier with
things like SQL server etc which I have sort of used.
I am being supported for doing an MCSD but I find it difficult, I am having
to learn from books etc, but I just get 60 to 70% in the tests the problem
is, we don't use COM based development at work although I am slowly learning
this by my self I am not sure what the best practice etc is.
So what should I do? Its not worth moving cause I shall get training during
the year, but also I am misiing the sort of exposure that I would get from
a software company. E.g. Team work, technical resources etc..
Any opinions Let me know?

If I were you I would move on. You're definitely not being used to your full
potential. I was in that type of position before moving to my new job at
a software company. I've only been at the company for 6 months now and I've
learned so much that could never be learned in books or by doing small automation
jobs. Good luck!
