Career Advise Needed

Today I am for the first time on this type of newsgroup and I would really
appreciate if someone might give me some advice.
I am a Canadian citizen, currently employed in a company in Miami. Since
I am underpaid, and I have not worked as a programmer for 18 months, I am
looking for a job as a computer programmer/software developer in telecommunications.
I have graduated at the University of Split in Croatia, with a GPA of 3.86.
I have majored in telecommunicatons, and I was employed there for 10 months
(developing statistical applications for IVRs using MFC, C++ and MySQL).
Since I am a Canadian citizen, I couldn't find a U.S. company in the field
to write me a job offer so I could obtain a TN visa, so I started with this
company. I took two courses for C++ programming (not to be completly out
of programming). I had a couple of interviews, but everyone wanted only senior
programmers. It's been almost half of a year that I've been looking for a
new job, and I still don't have an offer. Also, I don't know how much I can
ask and if I have to take an entry level job, even though I am NOT an entry
level candidate.
All responds are greatly appreciated.
