Development work on the side
I need some advice on doing some VB work on the side. Basically, I would
like to keep my day job but do some work on the side in order to keep my
VB skills up. I would like to possibly get into some Web development. I
am a developer at my regular job but I'm not getting to develope in any Microsoft
technologies at this time. I should be getting back into Microsoft tools
in about 4 months or so but I feel I need to keep my skills up in the mean
time. The extra money would be nice too.
Has anyone successfully done this? How did you get started? How do you
land a contract?
Looking forward to hearing some feedback.

Try asychrony.com. You can get assigned a project and get paid in 'shares'
for your work.
When the project is completed, you get paid based on your 'shares' depending
upon how the
final product sells. There's more to this, but you can check out their site.

Well, you could of course read a book. Anybody who hasn't read Matt
Curland's Advanced VB book still has lots to learn. ;)

Hmmm. My side jobs are usually small desktop apps. Web development will
probably be very difficult to do as a part-time job, except for
non-commercial clients (i.e. home or small-business).

In my case through networking. Former employers, people I worked with, or
people that know me by reputation.
Make sure you scope things out properly. D. Kurata's "Doing Objects in VB6"
has a nice GUIDS methodology that leads to documents that are suitable to be
signed off by a client. You also need to discuss how ongoing support will
work.
