Career Change
Hi,
Im 32 years old and im a self taught VB6 programmer.I taught myself using
books and manuals and have done a few web applicatations.I currently have
worked as a machine technician for 8 years with a salary of 35k a year. I
came across a job opportunity as a programmer/internet application developer
with a consulting firm.
I applied and was accepted into their training program, which is 6 months.During
these 6 months i will be trained thu a module training program involving
VB6,SQL7 and Cold Fusion. This seems to be a great opportunity for me to gain
IT commerical experience in 6 months which other wise would take me years
to develop. The big catch is that i will have to relocate to another state
to train at their facitity and the firm does not pay me during the 6 months
of training. So i will have to live on my savings. After completion of the
training i will start with a salary of 50k.
My queston to the forum is: Do this seem like a good opportunity for me and
would anyone else in the forum pursue this type of opportunity.

# 1 Re: Career Change
Jerry,
I'm self taught was well. However, I started programming 20 years ago. The
20 years of experience is a big difference. For me the proposition would be
ridiculous. If a company is going to require me to train at their facility
for 6 months, I would expect them to pay me at least a reduced wage. 6
months is quite a long time to work for a company for no pay. (Yes I
consider training for a company working.)
It is a good opportunity, but it is also an expensive one. Can you afford
it? How many hours a day will you train? Will you be able to work part-time
elsewhere while you train? Do you have a family to support?
These are the type of questions you need to ask yourself before accepting
this job.

# 2 Re: Career Change
The answer seems pretty straight forward:
Can you afford to take 6 months off?
If you can, you're young; don't be such a wussy. Go for it.

Hi Jerry,
If you are joining a consulting firm , the amount of pay you are getting
is average and not a good one,
if they are able to offer you above 75K its worth,
And also ask them if they would provide a compensation during the training
, as most of the companies do pay while you are on training. So better ask
for it before you take any step.
Also the company should bear the cost of reclocation , stay , and food during
the training irrespective of how many hours how many hours you spend on training.
Best Luck
