Need some good advice
Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on my education. First some quick background:
I've got a B.A. in Radio/TV production, spent my highschool years votech
style, programming: RPG, Cobol, ForTran and BASIC as well as general office
software (spreadsheets etc).
My career goal is new media, i.e. the integration of video/tv/radio with
the internet (and vice/versa). I've got the video stuff down pat, and I'm
a average to good web designer (self taught) using raw HTML and more recently,
Dreamweaver.
So, here's the question(s):
What should I learn next? I'm already looking to teach myself Macromedia
Flash, but I'm specifically interested in internet programming technologies.
It seems useless to know photoshop, and all the design tools without knowing
some internet programming.
I didn't really keep up with programming past HS (if you ever used Cobol
you might know why). So, what is a good language to learn. Something that's
marketable, has a descent learning curve, and has some applications to web
design and other entertainment media (like games for instance). VB, Java,
Pearl?
I don't want to learn more than one, that would be moving too far away from
my media goals, I believe.
Also:
I'm certain I should get a better understanding of Javascript, but should
I bother with VBScript?
One more thing. What server technology should I start to cuddle up on?
ASP, JSP or CF?
And is there anything else I'm missing?
Thanks in advance for all your good advice.

Flash integrates well with Asp. Check out DreamWeaver Ultra on macromedia's
site. I like the flashy and the backend so I do both.

# 3 Re: Need some good advice
I actually got a copy of ultradev recently. I haven't used it for Server
Pages yet because I was afraid to dumb myself down. In other words, if I
were to do ASP I'd like to learn the coding first and then use the "tool"
to make it easier. Otherwise I may never really understand it. I've found
Dreamweaver already makes me a pretty lazy HTML coder. It's too easy for
its own good.
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to look into ASP and Flash (which I also
have a copy of) and from the other post: streaming media server tech.

# 4 Re: Need some good advice
Greg,
Good plan on the ASP. It may help somewhat to let the "tool" or "wizards"
build some code, and then analyze the code they've generated. But it will
take discipline not to get lazy and rely solely on the tool.
As for dumbing down HTML, personally, I'd say don't worry about it. When I
started writing HTML I couldn't wait for a good GUI type editor. <shiver>
writing code to produce graphics <= yikes.
For graphics let the tools do their job, they can probably do it better than
you ever could writing HTML. But for code, no tool will ever produce the
most efficient code. Learn to program.
My two cents
