Career shift
Hi. it's my first time to post a message in this newsgroup and I just would
like to seek advice on how i can have a greater chance in getting an I.T.
job that is related to web design and development. it's a career shift on
my part since my work experience background is real estate for almost 11
years doing administrative, marketing & sales and customer service.i took
some short courses (HTML, Perl, Javascript, Networking, Flash 4, Dynamic
Web Page Development, Mastering Web Site Fundamentals using Frontpage & Mastering
Web Application using Visual Interdev6). I'm also a bit familiar with MS
Access, Adobe photoshop 5.5., Visual Basic, Java, and XML by studying those
Dummies series by myself.
My problem is: I have no I.T. work experience. i've been applying in some
I.T. companies seeking a job related to web design and development but they
always tell me that they prefer someone with experience. so my problem is
how can i gain experience if they will not hire me? my other option is to
seek an I.T. job in the U.S. Given my computer background, how can i market
myself better as i lack some work experience in the I.T. industry? hope someone
can help me. thanks in advance for your kind advices.

My advice in your position would be to approach a small company and offer to
build an e-commerce site for them for next to nothing or if you are lucky
some good money, but the key is to gain industry experience even if you are
not employed or being payed.
If you do a good job, you should get a letter from the company and you can
use this site to show potential employers.
Good luck.
Paul.

Ronnie,
If you're willing to go back to school you can get a work study position
with the school's IT dept. That will get you some experience.

You might try doing some web or VB programming for a real estate firm or
related company. I would think you can capitalize on your extensive background
in real estate to interest a company in that field. Realtors usually have
a personal web page now, and listings appear on the web. Someone like you
with a comprehensive real estate background and courses in programming might
be able to get started doing web programming for realtors or real estate
agencies. I got my first programming job because a company wanted a programmer
who understood accounting, which was my primary background at that time.

# 6 Re: Career shift
Ronnie,
This worked really well for me. Volunteer at your local Red Cross, Boy Scout
Troop, etc. to build and maintain their web page. Many ISP's volunteer web
space for these kinds of organizations. Either the ISP maintains the page
or volunteers from the different organizations do it. Make sure that you
document every page on your resume and that the pages are active. This should
help. I started this way and landed a job as a Software Test Engineer.
When one of our Network Administrators left for a better paying job in Dallas,
I talked to my boss and took that job (and the pay raise). I now do Systems
Administration duties where I work, but my boss uses me to program also.
I just finished a company Intranet using IIS, ASP, and VB Script.
Good luck.

# 8 Re: Career shift
Have you looked into volunteer opportunities that can build your resume. I
know most local red cross chapters have an associated web site that can be
accessed from the main www.redcross.org. Check them out and good luck in
your pursuit.
