Is Canada a good place to work?
Hi All,
I' m working in Bulgaria (Europe) and I'll get "Permanent
Resident of Canada" status very soon.
I'm wondering is Montreal a good plase to start my career in
IT again. I have few certificates (non MS) for Administering
W95/98/NT, networking. In my first years in IT business I
was in a hardware company and I understand from it (have
Brainbench certificate for hardware).
I know English(very well) and french(well).
So my idea is to go to Montreal so there the cost of living
is less.
Some friends of mine told me that in Toronto there are many
opportunities to choose but there the cost of living is
higher.
Can anyone briefly explain is there something in that true
and because I know the canadian expirience is important, can
I try to go to a company and work for few weeks for free?

Canada:
It is a huge country, with places other than Toronto and Montreal. Montreal
is starting to pick up, but T.O. (as we call it) is the center of the buisness
comunity.
If your French is so/so, and you want to do network support, I would recommend
Toront. But you should consider other palces like Calgary or Vancouver as
well.
I am a programmer (VB) and make a good living in Ottawa....

I'm studying VB now and I'm participating in a team of
programmers. My second code is ready so maybe I'll try to be
a programmer there. I just need more experience.

To be short: in Toronto there are more job/career opportunites. Ottawa is
booming as well. They are both in Ontario, where the income taxes are significantly
lower as well. Montreal, on the other hand, is a better/nicer place to live
in, and cheaper as well, but poorer. You might want to start in Montreal
and if the job(s) you get is(are) not satisfactory then you can move.

Salut,
comme tu dis parler le franais, je t'cris en franais car c'est ma langue
maternelle. Je vis dans la rgion de montral et je peux te dire qu'il ne
manque pas d'emploi en informatique. Mais je crois que peux importe o tu
iras, tu trouveras de l'emploi en informatique.
De plus, le cot de la vie est beaucoup moins lev Montral qu' Toronto.
Une maison qui cote 300 000$ Toronto va couter 125 000 $ dans la rgion
de montral. Et souvent, les touristes europens disent que Montral un
ct europens unique en amrique du nord.
Je ne crois pas que tu as besoins de travailer gratuitement pour te trouver
un emploi, si tu es comptent, bilingue et que tu as quelques programmes que
tu peux montrer, tu trouveras du travail.
C'est vrai que les taxes et impts sont plus leves au Qubec, mais le
systme social est plus dvelopp.
Il y a des avantages et des inconvnients pour les deux endroits, toi de
dterminer ce qui est le plus importants.

Just as an note: Ottawa is booming, but they are looking primarily for engineers
(read: electrical) rather then I.T people. And for the I.T people they are
looking for, the focus tends to be on C++ programmers, and then Unix admins.
Toronto is a better bet if you want more job variety, and you don't mind
living in Oshawa.
