Anyone willing to start a CPAN-like initiative ?
Hi
Because the .Net framework will become within 2 or 3 years a fairly
important platform, I wonder if it would be a great idea if some guys could
start a web sites with the main objective to distribute .Net components
under a GPL license or equivalent. The .Net framework provides enough
functionality to let programmers writting some very interesting
standard-like components.
I reckon that the "Microsoft" world has a very different approach compared
to the Linux world for delivering business solutions, but I really think
that having a source of free .Net components will propel the .Net framework
far beyond.
Hope that post will make some people to think about that ;)
Daniel.

What is CPAN? I might be interested in doing something like this..

# 2 Re: Anyone willing to start a CPAN-like initiative ?
Thank you for having answered to my post.
I would like to think about the kind of functionality a web site offering
free .Net components should have.
Cpan.org is nice because it is the de-facto official source for Perl
components but it is not after all a very complex web site to develop and it
could offer much better interactivity with forums for instance.
I am mainly an .asp developer so I know what kind of .net components would
be interesting to have in such a context but I really don't know about kind
of components would be interesting for windows applications. This brings the
problem of the focus of the site, should it be focused on ASP+ .NET
components or simply for all .NET components
Maybe I would need some help about that.

Is the idea to essentially offer a versioned source repository ala how the
source trees for Gnome et al. are offered?

Yes kind of, all builds of the component should be stored on the site and
some users could post bug reports, discuss new features on forums too or how
to implement the component, etc etc...

Check out SourceForge (http://www.sourceforge.net), which is good for this,
and already exists.
There's already one .NET project there:

Yep, that was exactly the sort of things I was thinking about. They provide
some nice features, especially for the forum and also give the ability to
create roles too.

How's it going?
I think that is an excellent idea. We presently have a site dedicated to
asp.net. How can we get started. My company is already working on different
webserver controls.
Integrating that should not be a problem. Let me look into cpan and see
how they have it set up. if you have anyother ideas let me know. My email
is above. Also, my contact info below,'

As Justin Rogers pointed out, it would be great to implement some specific
ASP+ features in it, like using the Web Services for interacting with the
site.
